Whenever you meet an uncle or aunty they will casually start with “how are you doing?”. But don’t lower your guard because their real target is “How much money do you make?”.
If you are caught off-guard then you easily give away an answer. Then the discussion might go in any direction based on the cringe score of uncle/aunty. Some possible discussions -
A direct comparison with their son’s/daughter’s income.
Passing a judgement on your employer or your business. Suggesting an alternate path to salvation.
Why haven’t you bought a house/car yet?
For me this becomes a very awkward discussion. I never like to talk about my income to anyone in any scenario. There are scenarios where people ask this question as a part of the process. E.g. You are applying for a loan or consulting someone about their salary or income. Even in that scenario I feel little uncomfortable discussing my income.
But in any social setting I think it is inappropriate to ask how much money do you make?
What do you think?
